“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good”. (Romans 12:21)
I’m TIRED! Tired of the hatred. Tired of the mass violence. Tired of the senseless killings. Tired of the injustices. Tired of the social media back and forth. Tired of the taking of sides. Tired of the “us” vs. “them”. Tired of the black vs. white. Tired of the fear. Tired of the anger. I’m just TIRED!
Our nation, in fact our world, is extremely divided, spilling over with violent and deadly conflicts on a daily basis. Daily news reports are filled with murders, racial divide, rampant hatred, and total disregard for humanity. My current social media news feed is flooded with the account of the San Francisco 49ers football quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s decision to sit during the playing of the United States’ national anthem at the start of a preseason game. As I stream through the timeline, posts filled with anger, hatred, divisiveness, and frustration from both non-Christians and Christians regarding his patriotism now flood my news feed. The line has truly been drawn.
Our nation and world has now been forced to choose a side, creating a hopeless division. We have entered a place of irreconcilable brokenness, non-Christians and Christians alike. This divide is so overwhelming that I am tempted to withdraw from everything, all news accounts, all social media feeds and hide my head in the sand until all of this just blows over. Where is God in all of this? Where is our God?
Just like today’s times, Jesus entered a world that was divided. Many hoped the coming Messiah would bring order to this divided, broken world, by FINALLY choosing a side (Jews vs. Gentiles). After all, didn’t He see the centuries of injustice waged against the Jews? Didn’t He hear their cries? Didn’t He come from the lineage of Jews? Wouldn’t He be obligated to fight for and save JUST the Jews, based on His lineage? Wouldn’t He FINALLY choose a side?
Our saving Messiah came to a divided world with power, strength and love to FINALLY choose His side….the cross! Contrary to the side all hoped he would choose, His love drove Him to the cross. For God so loved the WORLD, (black lives, blue lives, white lives, Jews AND Gentiles) that He gave His one and only son, that whoever believes in Him will not perish, but have eternal life. Through the cross, the dividing line had been erased.
The love of Jesus broke every divide and tore down every wall! His love reigned true then and His love reigns true now! His eternal love overcame the divide. To be honest, I am still so frustrated, at times even angry, with this world’s prevalent injustice and great divide. I have to make a choice – I just have to choose a side in this! My prayer is that I would choose the side of the cross; that the message of the cross would invade my heart and overcome my thoughts. For God so loved the WORLD! What side do you choose?
